Prayer Book Burial Collection

As a complimentary service, Jerusalem Memorial Chapels will bury all damaged and worn-out prayer books, religious texts, and damaged holy items, which you would like to have respectfully retired.

Why do we bury Jewish prayer books?

Jewish prayer books are considered to be holy objects. When a prayer book is worn out or damaged, it is customary to bury it in a respectful manner. This is done to show respect for the Torah and the holy words that are contained in the prayer book, including the name of Hashem. Another reason for burying Jewish prayer books is that they are often used to contain the names of deceased loved ones. When a prayer book is no longer in use, it is buried so that the names of the deceased are not forgotten. Finally, Jewish prayer books may be buried as a way to protect them from being desecrated. In some cases, prayer books have been burned or destroyed by anti-Semites. Burying a prayer book is one way to ensure that it is not destroyed in this way and given a proper burial with dignity and respect.
